Christopher's American Grill
MyVillage ReviewAmericans know how to eat. They do it very well. Not only that but their breakfasts are internationally famous in both taste and... stature. So on the way down to Christopher’s American Grill to check out their new breakfast menu, I was aware that indulgence was going to be on the cards.
The interior as you walk in is strikingly impressive. Greeted first by a dark marble lobby, the upstairs dining area is perfect for this delicate time of the morning. Bright but not overbearing, with tall windows that look out over theatreland; there’s a quiet ambiance that fits well.
Seated and straight into ordering, I go for the American breakfast - a distinctly Stateside combination of buttermilk pancakes, maple syrup and cured bacon with squeezed orange juice and a bottomless cup of coffee/tea. I was slightly concerned that this was going to come as a hefty, greasy stack but Christopher’s have noted the modesty in British eating habits, and what arrived was a modest plate of perfectly presented, moist and fresh pancakes, with thin cuts of bacon.
Buttermilk pancakes really are something, and the cured bacon gives a needed body to the sweet maple syrup. Expertly cooked, very tasty and not intimidatingly huge – this is ‘set-yourself-up-for-the-day’ eating without the heaviness of a fry-up. That’s not to say they can’t do it, in fact the English breakfasts here are full but again presented in a way so as to not daunt.
Staff are obliging, though they do have the habit of hanging about when it’s quieter. Still, service is impeccable and food gets to you quick. Slight atmosphere of a hotel restaurant which could put some people off, but it is still very comfortable.
Plenty of coffee and a selection of papers - somewhere to bear in mind if you’re in town early and need some pep. Open from 7 in the morning, it’s popular with local city workers for breakfast power meetings.

This is a seriously classy place. Once you have mounted the sweeping stone staircase you emerge into two bright, high-ceilinged rooms with elegant dark purple walls and a wooden floor. The big windows look down onto Lancaster Place and Waterloo Bridge, and the staff quickly whisk you to a table. The food is excellent, with great contasts of textures and complementary tastes - try the seared scallops with cauliflower and almond cream, with raisin caper dressing, for example. We particularly liked the attentive service and the cool, quiet atmosphere - there is no background music, which is a blessing. A very good place for an intimate lunch or dinner, and the Sunday brunch is probably in town. Booking strongly recommended.
A great location and fantastic interior. Service prompt and friendly - we were eating pre-theatre and we ate in good time though never felt rushed. Food came quickly and was delicious, hot and beautifully presented.- as usual. We particularly recommend the weekend brunch.
